Thursday, September 19 | 6 - 9PM
On September 19, EXCAVO will open Not Bodies, an exhibition of new works by Madrid born, Berlin-based Artist Marina Roca Die, Curated by Moira McKee.
With a quiet elegance, Roca Die addresses the transformative power that nature has on our bodies through the acceptance of physical and psychological change; fragmenting, then melding the human body with botanical elements to form new, hybrid living beings that represent a shared trait of the living--what Jorge Luis Borges refers to in The Book of Imaginary Beings as ‘The Will.’
Following her Degree in Plastic Arts and Design from La Palma School of Art in Madrid, Roca Die completed studies in Chinese Painting techniques under Master Li Chi Pang and the Anatomy of the Human Body at the world-renowned Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London and is represented by the female-led BBA Gallery, Berlin.
'A body, the body, our bodies – a phenomenon so fundamental and basic in our lives and still, in the flesh, so imperceptible. We live through it, in it, with it and sometimes against it. We cannot live without it. It is a perpetual paradox: I am not my body and yet I do not exist without it. It is a vessel containing all that is 'I', but still ceaselessly this 'I' overflows its enclosing borders.'
- Marina Roca Die
This will be Roca Die’s first time exhibiting in North America, returning to Berlin September 21st.
